Her hair flings back with water, the waves crash down, and some average surfing maneuvers are all shown in slow motion. After a few minutes of this, Nancy is in the water by herself, surfing the big waves, which is when everything become slow motion for the duration of the film. We just miss out on all the supposed beautiful shots and cinematography. The stupid thing about this is that the camera even shows the actual phone screen in frame as well through all of this. She’s being driven through a beautiful part of the forest to get to this amazing paradise view, but you wouldn’t know it, because the director has Nancy texting her friend the whole time, while the screen captions are displayed largely on the screen at all times in real time.
It is implied that she dropped out of med school after her mother died of cancer (a horrible side story full of cheese). There’s just so much wrong with this movie, it’s hard to decipher where to begin, but as a charming nun/babysitter said, “Let’s start at the very beginning.” We first meet Nancy (Lively) as she is being driven to a remote beach to surf while she is on vacation. Blake Lively, who plays a young woman named Nancy, does a decent enough job with the material she’s given, but after reading the screenplay, I would have walked far away from this film and never looked back, even if I got to go to Australia for a few weeks and film. It’s poorly written, poorly shot, and doesn’t make a lick of sense. It’s terrible filmmaking on just about every level. After sleeping on it for a night, this film might be one of the worst and silliest films to come out this year.
It takes the audience out of the moment, as is the horrid case with the new killer shark movie ‘The Shallows‘. The two locals depart, unaware of Nancy’s situation, leaving Nancy to spend the night on the rock with a wounded seagull, whom she names Steven, after Steven Seagal.Note to filmmakers: When you make a movie, DON’T use slow motion for over 80% of your film, especially in the horror/thriller genre. Nancy swims to an isolated rock, where she places an improvised tourniquet consisting of her surfboard strap, her earrings, and the sleeve of her wetsuit on her leg to stop the bleeding. Nancy crawls onto the whale carcass, where she stays until the shark rams it from underneath. As she surfaces to her board, the shark bites her leg, pulling her under. While riding her last wave back to the beach, a large great white shark bumps her surf board, causing her to fall and hit her head on a submerged rock. While waiting for a wave, Nancy notices the carcass of a large humpback whale floating about twenty yards away. The conversation becomes emotional and strained, and Nancy hangs up to catch one more wave in the late afternoon before heading back to her hotel. When she talks to her father (Brett Cullen), it is revealed that her mother’s death has caused Nancy to consider dropping out of medical school. Taking a break from surfing, Nancy video-chats her sister Chloe (Sedona Legge) to let her know that she is surfing at their mother’s beach. After arriving at the beach, Nancy joins two other local residents, and the three surf for several hours. Nancy gets a ride to the beach from Carlos (Oscar Jaenada), a friendly local resident, who refuses to tell her the beach’s name, saying only that it is paradise. Shortly after the death of her mother, medical student Nancy Adams (Blake Lively) travels to a secluded beach in Mexico to surf, which is also the same beach her mother surfed at after finding out she was pregnant with Nancy many years before. The video on the GoPro is of a man struggling to get out of the water and onto a rock only to be dragged under and killed by an enormous shark. He finds a GoPro camera attached to a helmet washed up on the surf which he picks up.
